Are your feet dry and cracked?

Is the skin on your feet dry and/or cracked? If you answered yes, let me tell you that you are not alone!

Coming into the warmer months dry, cracked feet can not only be unsightly but can cause itchiness, pain and leave you open for a secondary infection. There are so many foot soaks and creams out there on the market, but for the best results you should see your podiatrist. As podiatrists we can remove the callused, dead skin and recommend particular creams to help leave your feet feeling soft and ready for open heeled footwear through Spring and Summer!

Some of the causes of dry, cracked feet are:

-          Genetics: Skin type can often be genetic, leaving you prone to having dry skin

-          Diabetes: Quite often Diabetes can lead to less sweating and therefore less moisture.

-          Lifestyle factors: There are many factors including wearing thongs or open backed shoes, walking around barefoot or walking and standing on hard surfaces such as concrete or floorboards.

-          Medical factors such as Thyroid, poor circulation, dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal conditions.

Treatments:

So, seeing your podiatrist for treatment of dry and callused skin is generally your best option. As mentioned, we will remove the hardened, cracked skin. Depending on your individual condition we might recommend for you to use a gentle pumice stone between visits to us. Often, we will recommend a urea based cream for you to use daily. We use and recommend RESTORATE. We stock it here at Footrix Podiatry and we have not found a better cream that is non greasy and does the job 😊

So come on down to Footrix Podiatry – we’ll keep you on your feet.
